Meet Rooster and Fred!

Rooster is a beautiful German Shorthair Pointer who was born on April 7, 2016 and came to live with his family when he was a wee 8 weeks old puppy.  Fred is a Dachshund and was a puppy when his Mom first met him at the Veterinary Clinic where she works.  She adopted him when he was 11 years old after his older owner could no longer care for him.  Many of Fred’s “quirks” would not allow him to be adopted by just anyone, and he was fortunate enough to find a family that is gracious enough to accept him for who he is.

Being the typical GSP, Rooster needs lots and lots of exercise but with his short haircoat he doesn’t handle extreme cold or heat very well.  Regular attendance at Doggy Daycare and Spa allows him to get the exercise and socialization he needs to be a happy well-adjusted dog even when the weather doesn’t allow him to be outside comfortably.  Fred became a “hip hound” shortly after being adopted at 11.  At first, he wasn’t so sure about spending the day with so many friends, but now he is excited for his daycare days!  Coming to daycare regularly has also provided a place where both dogs are comfortable spending the night when their family is traveling.  It puts their family at ease knowing they are well taken care of and loved.

When they aren’t at daycare, both dogs like to snuggle on the couch with the people they love.  Fred the 13lb dog doesn’t like to sit on our lap but wants to be next to us touching while the 60lb dog, Rooster, is the lap dog.  Both the boys also love going for 2–3-mile walks around Crandall Park.  They whine with excitement when they realize where they are headed.  Rooster runs the whole time while Fred even at 12 ½ years old likes to walk at a brisk pace, but also needs to stop at and sniff all the good smells.

The boys love any toy provided but destroy will destroy anything they can in 30 minutes or less, therefore they are stuck with indestructible Kong toys.  Rooster’s knack for destruction and eating anything has come in handy at his Mom’s veterinary clinic where he has become a staple for radiographs and medically induced vomiting.  Fortunately, he has never had to have anything surgically removed!  Fred is devious when it comes to toys, and if Rooster has one he decides he should have, he will bark at his people or the window to get Rooster to leave his toy so Fred can then steal and hoard it.

Both boys are sorry to see Fall pass as it seems to be their favorite season, however, they both enjoy evening fires where they will lounge in front of the fireplace.  Fred will move when he gets too warm, but Rooster must be made to move when he starts panting.

Rooster is the most amazing dog and has been a blessing to his family.  He loves and lives with his whole heart and the only time he is unhappy is when his brother Fred is trying to take his spot on the bed or couch.  It is a way most people should live their lives… always happy with whatever comes their way and making the best of every situation.

Fred, on the other hand, has but a few redeeming qualities.  He is stubborn, may bite, poops in the house, doesn’t listen, licks the couches, and steals Rooster’s toys.  However, his human sister absolutely loves him more than anything in the whole world and that love is worth putting up with all his quirks.

Happy holidays to Rooster, Fred, and their family!
